If someone asked Glynn or me what town we think about when someone mentions the Gulf of Mexico, both of us would probably say Gulf Shores, AL. Up until last week (mid-March 2018), I was the only one who had been to Biloxi, MS. I was only there for a few hours somewhere around 1995. I had an uncle that lived in Pensacola that my mother and I were visiting that wanted to go to Biloxi to the casino for the evening.

When our kids were young, we used to take a little popup camper to Fort Pickens in Pensacola, FL until hurricane Ivan tore up the road to the island. After that happened, we sold the camper and started renting condos in Gulf Shores, AL. We liked Gulf Shores so much, we just kept going back. That is until we started Financial Peace University and stopped spending for vacations as a means to reduce debt. I don’t know why, but we never even considered Biloxi!

BILOXI, MS AS A DESTINATION

So here’s the deal, we just spent a week in Biloxi. It was rainy for the first two days. It never got above 75 degrees the rest of the week. We went there to chill, relax, and hang out with friends. Would we go back to Biloxi as a destination? ABSOLUTELY!

We left a TON of stones unturned in our one little week we were there. There were a TON of restaurants that I’d love to go back and enjoy again. Casinos are a big attraction, but my fav was the Hard Rock Casino (secretly, I’d like to stay there…but don’t tell anyone!). I LOVE rock-n-roll memorabilia!

Let me make some suggestions for things to do and places to go.

RV PARKS IN BILOXI

After a quick search on Google Maps, I found a TON of RV parks in Biloxi. There are four that were pretty close to the water. We stayed at the Gulf Beach RV Resort. You can read my review here. We LOVED it there!

I also drove through the Cajun RV Park. Going back to that park is DEFINITELY on my to-do list. The lots were bigger, with grass and picnic tables. That was one of my few negatives about Gulf Beach RV Resort was that it was all concrete, with small sites and didn’t have picnic tables at each site. Cajun has all of that, but NONE of it is paved, so there is that!

I didn’t go to any of the others, but I’d be sure to read the Google reviews before going to any of them.

RESTAURANTS

The WHOLE reason we ended up in Biloxi is that our friends watch Food Network and saw a restaurant called The Shed on a show and wanted to go to it. They looked up RV parks in or near Biloxi, and that’s how we ended up where we did.

The Shed - Biloxi

The Shed was AMAZING! It looks like…well…a shed that someone put together with scraps and leftovers from construction projects. We ordered our meals (BBQ sampler platters) and took a seat in the bleachers outside to watch the band. The band was a blues band called Johnny No and they were SMOOTH! Great restaurant, great food, great music!

Fillin' Station Biloxi

My friend found out about another restaurant called Fillin’ Station. Apparently, a local, but chatty, man at the beach told them about it. We decided to go and everyone loved what they got. They did have seafood selections, but Austin (my son) and I split a burger plate. The whole vibe reminded me of Andy Griffith’s Mayberry. It just had a small town feel. Our server treated us like family!

Zeppelin's Biloxi

One night, the others went out to casinos. Austin & I didn’t really feel like doing that, so he & I went out for pizza at a place called Zeppelin’s. I mean, with a name like that, you’ve GOTTA try it if you’re a rock fan. Am I right?! Of course! We were actually hunting karaoke, but they didn’t have it that night. The pizza was great though. I’d like to go back on a karaoke night!

One last place I’d like to mention is a restaurant called Slap Ya Momma’s BBQ. I took my chances and asked Austin if he’d like to go (he’s a good kid…and he knows better than slapping his momma!). You wouldn’t believe the burger he got…it was HUGE! He said he’s gonna have dreams about that burger. I got a BBQ plate that was pretty delish, too!

THINGS TO DO IN BILOXI

Hard Rock CasinoI’d be remiss if I didn’t just say right off the bat that Biloxi is very much a casino town. If you like to gamble, Biloxi is the place for you. There are several world-class casino resorts there. Hard Rock Casino was neat with all of the rock memorabilia and robo-bar (robots that mix up alcoholic drinks for you. There was also a Margaritaville Resort there that had a casino, but it looked like a destination in and of itself. Beau Rivage is stunningly beautiful inside. Even if you’re not into gambling, you should take a walk through the lobby. So pretty!

Of course, there is golf, beach volleyball, Sea-Doo, kayak, and water trike rentals.  You can also catch concerts and shows at the various casinos and the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

If you’re into baseball, you can catch a Biloxi Shuckers game at the MGM Park. They are a Double-A baseball team with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

When we went to Slap Ya Momma’s, we saw a place that would be great to take your family if you had small kids. There was a bowling alley, mini golf, and an arcade. Sounds like fun to me!

HISTORY

Beauvoir

Beauvoir was the last home of the Confederate president Jefferson Davis. We actually did this tour. It was around $12 per person and took us a couple of hours to do. It was an interesting walk through history.

We wanted to go to Ship Island, but the ferry didn’t start running until the week after we left. All of our research promised a great day at pristine beaches. I was more interested in the history behind Fort Massachusetts which in on the island.

There was a chatty retired science teacher in the laundromat that was telling me I needed to go to the old lighthouse (I was chatty with him…so, not his fault). It only costs $5 per adult and $2 for kids 12 and under.

A young local told us that if we drove west for about 30 minutes along the beach, that we’d come into an old part of Mississippi and start seeing some really cool antebellum homes. I wanted to do this, but our AC went out in our SUV and we had to take it to get that fixed.

There are also a couple of different kinds of museums in or near Biloxi that would be neat to go to.

THE BEACH

Biloxi beach low tide

One of the most interesting things to me about Biloxi was that the water is VERY shallow. I would imagine this would be PERFECT for families with small kids. When the tide goes out at night, you can walk out on what was the ocean a few hours earlier. You can walk out for at least 100 yards. It was cool!

Biloxi Beach

The sand is a pretty as anything you’d see in Alabama or Florida. It was too cold for us to get in the water, but I enjoyed my walks on the shore. I also enjoyed sunrises and sunsets on the beach. Is it wrong to wear flip-flops and a sweatshirt together?!

Biloxi was VERY enjoyable and I’d TOTALLY go back again! You should go, too!
